Powerlessness and Unmanageability

Understanding Step 1: Powerlessness and Unmanageability
Step 1 of Alcoholics Anonymous states: “We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.”
These words invite an honest look at our relationship with alcohol and its impact on everyday life.
Powerlessness can show up as repeatedly drinking more than intended or being unable to maintain a decision to stop. Examples include:
- Planning to have two drinks and regularly having more.
- Setting rules, such as drinking only on weekends, then breaking them.
- Returning to drinking despite promises to yourself and others.
Unmanageability describes how drinking disrupts our lives, both outwardly and internally. Examples include:
- Missing responsibilities at work or home.
- Hiding drinking, arguing with loved ones, or damaging trust.
- Spending money needed for other priorities.
- Feeling consumed by guilt, anxiety, or planning the next drink—even while appearing successful.
You do not have to lose everything to recognize these patterns. Step 1 begins with acknowledging what is happening and becoming willing to accept help. That honesty can open the door to meaningful change.
